Former Cabinet Secretary Of Sports Hassan Wario was on Wednesday 15th September 2021 found guilty of abuse of office over the Rio 2016 Olympic Games financial scandal.

Wario and former National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) Stephen Soi have been convicted of corruption and abuse of office over willfully not complying with the applicable procedures relating to public funds.

The court while charging Wario said that the former cs took advantage of the office and allowed three other people’s names to be included in the Kenya travel team list and have allowances paid to them.

“The additional names were included after they closed the accreditation, Clearly this was an indicator that the three were not part of the team Kenya. The court said.

“Some (sports) ministry officials misappropriated Sh88,611,480 meant for air tickets. NOCK has been misappropriating Nike contract funds and kit amounting to Sh126 million per year meant for athletes since 2013,” the report reads.

The court also learned that the Ministry could not account for about Ksh 54 million.

Magistrate Elizabeth Juma said that the former Sports Cabinet Secretary did not have the authority to allow the three to travel to RIO in Brazil. The three were  Monica Sairo, Richard Abura and Edan Adow who were all given allowance.

The former CS and the Soi will be detained at the Gigiri Police Station pending their sentencing on Thursday.
