Deputy President William Ruto has proved to be a master of playing mind games in his own way amid the escalating antagonism between him and a clique of powerful forces in government.

In what appeared to be a move to disapprove the state who controversially downgraded his security detail, the second in command brought all the newly deployed AP officers together for tea as they shared pleasantries in his Karen residence.

An occasion which signifies that he is unbowed and can work with any team, even G4S security guards, as he earlier claimed.

Four days ago, the poorly communicated changes caused alot of storm across the political divide as the General Service Unit (GSU) officers assigned to guard the residences of DP Ruto were replaced with those from the Administration Police Service’s Security of Government Buildings Unit.

Most of Ruto’s allies blamed the President for the changes.

They said replacing the GSU with AP officers who are not trained in combat, urban warfare and VIP protection was definitely suspect, adding that the government was planning to plant compliant officers who would easily be manipulated by the State agents to cause harm to the DP.

Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i of being behind the changes.
